Don't push slam in competition

Reel 37 of 43
0 today

In competitive auctions, don't push slam - let your default be to keep it low, don't stress if you miss a slam. Just avoid -50!

The mentality for about 80-90% of slams is a discussion with partner, its not a random punt. If you don't have room to discuss and you need to, don't go. There are the occasional hands which, even if partner has a very disappointing hand, will be fine in slam. But don't be overly optimistic and hope partner has an amazing hand.

Rule

In competitive auctions, don't fall into the trap of going -50 by bidding too high.

For example

Here you could have slam on. Partner could have a singleton diamond, the Ace of clubs, King of spades, and you will claim immediately - thats only 7 points. However, if you have 2 diamond losers and a club loser, you are not safe on the 5 level. As it happens, that was the case

Partner had a full 10 high card points for his raise, yet you have 3 top losers. Don't go -50!

Rule

Be slow going to slam, especially in competition - don't gamble.
