Double, Double

Modern takeout doubles are geared towards being able to compete as frequently as possible - with the knowledge that letting the opponents play in a 2 level fit is typically a losing habit

It is fairly common these days to play, in most auctions, that we have two takeout doubles. For example.

Here we have doubled, the main message will be "takeout". We will never have 5 spades for this bid - if we had 5, we would just bid it.

The modern way to play is that the second double doesn't either guarantee 4 spades. We need to be flexible enough to use a double on such hands as this.

Here once again we are competing to either of our minors - we double for takeout. Partner needs to be on the same page, because if 2 is bid, we need to be able to correct to a minor, giving partner the picture that we have takeout for the minors. Give this auction to your partner for discussion - make sure you are on the same page
